The motto Honi soit qui mal y pense (Middle French: "shame upon him who thinks evil upon it") is most often associated with The Most Noble Order of the Garter, founded in 1348; the highest order of chivalry existing in England. The motto has been adopted by various institutions; the reason for its use here - with the Rose of England, the Thistle of Scotland, and the Shamrock of Ireland - is unclear.
